Flames recall Oliver Kylington on emergency basis

After having recalled David Rittich, Rasmus Andersson, Jon Gillies, and, finally, Spencer Foo, the Flames are out of regular recalls.

That doesn’t mean they can’t make an emergency recall, though. To that end, Oliver Kylington has been brought up, on a just in case basis.

The Flames lost Travis Hamonic early on in Thursday night’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. With T.J. Brodie already out for the year, that leaves them with just six healthy defencemen, as it looks like Matt Bartkowski will play his first game since Feb. 3 (and his second game in 2018).

There is a but to this, though: there is a chance one of the Flames’ six available defencemen may not be able to play. Think illness, a last minute injury, what have you will; in which case, the Flames would be forced to play with just five defencemen. Hence, the contingency for an emergency recall: now, if one of Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton, Michael Stone, Brett Kulak, Andersson, or Bartkowski is unable to play, Kylington can slot in.

But only if one of those six cannot go for whatever reason. If they all can, then Kylington has to sit, no exceptions.

Kylington, 20, is in the first year of his entry-level deal, but already playing his third AHL season. He has five goals and 31 points over 56 games this year, setting a new career high in points in fewer games played. He’s sixth overall in Stockton scoring, and third amongst defencemen, behind Andersson and Tyler Wotherspoon. Kylington has one NHL game to his name: the final game of the 2015-16 season, in which he had one shot over 17:22 minutes.
