The Calgary Flames have made another selection at the 2020 NHL Draft. With the 72nd overall pick in the third round, they have chosen defenseman Jeremie Poirier from the QMJHL’s Saint John Sea Dogs.
A product of Quebec, Poirier is 6’1″ and 190 pounds and shoots left. He’s just beginning his third season in the QMJHL. Last season he was an offensive powerhouse, with 20 goals and 53 points in 64 games. The kid is confident as heck with the puck, skates well, and plays a smart offensive game.
Defensively? Well, he’s a work in progress. Poirier has some holes in his two-way game that he’ll need to work on. Here’s what The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler dug up (paywall):
The divisiveness of Poirier’s game has never been about his skill with the puck, but rather his play without it.
This season, he had the second-worst plus-minus on his team at minus-25, despite playing virtually the entire year alongside Villeneuve, who was a minus-5. He was outscored 101-80 at even strength (44.2 goals-for percentage) and was on the ice for more goals against than all but one QMJHL player.
For that, Richardson used to call him an “offenceman.”
If he can fix the defensive miscues, Poirier could be a steal.
Poirier is no relation to 2013 Flames first round pick Emile Poirier.
