Flames sign Louis Domingue to one year, two-way deal ($700k)

The Calgary Flames have signed a third string goalie. The club has announced the signing of Louis Dominigue to a one year, two-way contract worth $700,000 at the NHL level.

Domingue, 28, has been everywhere, it seems. He joins the Flames after stops with the Arizona Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils and, yes, the Vancouver Canucks. He was a fifth round selection of the Coyotes in 2010, back when Brad Treliving was an assistant general manager there. Domingue has played 139 career NHL games and posted a 3.05 goals against average and a .904 save percentage.

Last season, Domingue went 3-9-2 with a 3.81 goals against average and .882 save percentage split between (mostly) New Jersey and Vancouver. On the AHL side, he went 6-3-3 with a 2.89 GAA and .896 SV% split between Syracuse and Binghamton.

With Jon Gillies’ departure via free agency, the AHL tandem appeared destined to be second-year North American pro Artyom Zagidulin (0 NHL games) and oft-injured/sidelined ECHL starter Tyler Parsons (0 NHL games), who is presently dealing with an ankle issue according to Treliving.

With a likely compacted NHL schedule in 2019-20 and both Jacob Markstrom and David Rittich having dealt with injuries in recent seasons, Domingue is a low-cost insurance policy and at least ensures that the Flames’ goaltending hopes won’t default to two players with zero combined NHL games in the event either of their NHL tandem gets a boo-boo.
