Calgary Flames: 4 — Glencross (3) [EN], Matt Stajan [GWG]
Carolina Hurricanes: 1 — Eric Staal
NOTE: This post was written twice, as the first one disappeared into interwebmysteryland.
I missed this one. I am MAD! Not only was it not on TV, but I worked late too. Aaaaannd, I missed out on a road-trip down to C-town with two buddies – one a die-hard Flames fan, the other a die-hard ‘Canes/Whalers fan. From what I understand, the Flames played AWESOME and Darryl Sutter is a genius. Well, that last part is still to be determined, but he’s looking pretty smart so far.
  • Curtis Glencross, on a new-look checking line (4th line eh, check out our depth now 😉, scored his first career hat-trick.
  • Matt Stajan scored his first goal, a game-winner, as a Flame with a nice skate-to-stick move. He played well enough to earn 3rd star honors.
  • Ales Kotalik was used on the point on the PP seeing more PP ice time (3:11) than everyone but Daymond Langkow (3:28)
  • Jamal Mayers (also a member of the checking line) chipped in with an assist and a scrap.
  • Rene Bourque registered just his 3rd point in his last 10 games with an assist on Glencross’ 3rd goal.
  • Jay Bouwmeester (26:20), Mark Giordano (22:37), Daymond Langkow (20:43) and Robyn Regehr (20:25) all played more than 20 minutes. Everyone else ranged from 9:29 – 16:45.
  • Brent Sutter coached against his son Brandon for the first time in Calgary.
  • Hurricanes defenseman Nicklas Wallin is rumored to be on his way to San Jose. Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen, Scott Walker, Aaron Ward, Joe Corvo and Manny Legace could all soon be on their way out of town, too.
Check out Steinberg’s thoughts on the new guy’s as he wonders if the Flames are Back on Track?

UP NEXT:

The Flames embark on a three game road-trip beginning in Miami to take on the Panthers on Friday (02/05/10 @ 5:30 mt on Sportsnet & FAN960). It will be a return to the old stompin’ grounds for Bouwmeester and newly acquired Niklas Hagman.

KOVALCHUK, THAT DEVIL?

Are the New Jersey Devils sneaking in to the Ilya Kovalchuk sweepstakes? It appears so. LA, NYR, Philadelphia & Boston are among teams commonly mentioned, but Kevin Allen mentioned a surprise team and Bob McKenzie spoke of a mystery team.
And a late night peak at his twitter account showed – "Honestly would not surprise me. I can come up with more reasons why other teams won’t do it. Just a hunch." – when asked about a NJ possibility. He also re-tweeted this – A case could be made. 🙂 RT @NJerseyDevil: Dudley at Lowell game tonight + Waddell at NJ/Kings + Dudley also at NJ/Leafs. SOMETHING is up! Daren Millard had this tweet earlier – Too much flying around concerning who is serious about Kovalchuk. The usuals and execteds are there. But don’t count out New Jersey.
Elliotte Friedman tweeted – Don’t underestimate: NJ & Philly. Chicago out. He also wrote an article where he stated this – The Devils make a lot of sense, a team with Stanley Cup potential and in need of scoring, especially with the uncertain health of Patrik Elias. Kovalchuk could go a long way towards removing the skepticism about his game with a good performance there. However, it’s uncertain if New Jersey would or could provide Waddell with the impact he needs.
Word is the Tharashers are looking for a top-six forward, a top-four defenceman & a top pick or prospect. Watch Sweet Lou walk away with the sniper.

YOU CAN PUT IT IN THE WIN COLUMN!!!

OH YEAH… TAKE THAT, RIC FLAIR
