GDFD No. 40: Big Dog v. Little Dog
By RCN
14 years agoWelcome to the Game Day Fire Drill, for this, Calgary’s 40th game of the season on Dec. 31, 2009.
Normally TLP delivers these GDFD’s, but I’ll be pinch-hitting for him today. I’ll do my best TLP impersonation (starting with the dog pic), but with a little extra spin added from your’s truly. To check out what the competition has to say click here.

WHO
The Calgary Flames (22-12-5 for 49 points. Fifth in the West, second in the Northwest) and the Edmonton Oilers (16-20-4 for 36 points. Dead last in the West, fifth in the Northwest).
WHEN
7 p.m. Mountain time and 9 p.m. Eastern time. All other time zones should get a life.
WHERE
Pengrowth Saddledome, Calgary, Alberta.
Calgary is 10-7-2 at home this year, and just snapped a 3 game winless streak there. The Oilers are 7-10-2 on the road, and has lost to the Flames in all 3 meetings this year.
WHAT (TO HATE ABOUT THE OILERS)
Ladislav Smid – The Oiler defenceman has really come into his own this season, but he’s always throwing the face wash up after the whistle. That, and the fact he made Iggy look like a mere mortal last game. Since I see young Ladi being in eTown for a long time, we may as well start getting our hate on.
Dustin Penner – Although his numbers have tailed off in the 2nd quarter, he’s still easily been their best forward. He has made his physical presence felt in a John LeClair kind of way (without being overly physical). He uses his size & strength to his advantage this year, something he didn’t do enough of the past two seasons.
Taylor Hall – Every loss they rack up from here on out puts them that much closer to Taylor Hall. I’ll take the win for the Flames, but it could be awfully difficult watching the Oil draft Taylor Hall. Then again, maybe they’ll find a way to screw that up.
WHY
Because if they can’t beat the lowly Oilers to close out the year with a modest three game winning streak, what can they do? Enjoy the game and don’t forget to give TLP a shout out in the comments section.
