Hunter Smith & Oshawa Headed To Memorial Cup

In what is hopefully – but probably not – a harbinger of things to come, a Calgary Flames prospect is headed to the Memorial Cup while a prospective Edmonton Oilers first overall pick is headed home empty-handed.

Hunter Smith and the Oshawa Generals polished off their OHL Championship series last night, beating Connor McDavid’s Erie Otters in five games.

The Generals join the WHL Champion Kelowna Rockets, the Quebec Remparts and the Rimouski Oceanic (Quebec’s the host, so both QMJHL finalists get to go) in the Memorial Cup later this month.

Hunter Smith, Calgary’s second round pick in 2014, had 18 points in 21 OHL playoff games. In the five-game final series, he had 2 goals, 2 assists, a plus-6 rating and 8 penalty minutes. He had a goal and an assist in the series-clinching game. For giggles, McDavid had 2 goals, 4 assists, a minus-3 rating and 2 penalty minutes in the series.

The Memorial Cup kicks off on May 22 in Quebec City.
