The Good

• The final 40 minutes might be the best 40 Calgary has played all season. The Flames outshot the Canadiens 28-15 in the final two periods and outscored them 5-0. That’s pretty much the way to win every game. And that second period especially was, to quote Kent from last night’s comment section, a “statement period.”

• The penalty kill was brilliant, obviously. Despite taking a bunch of penalties, the Flames only gave up four power plays, and outscored the Habs on them 2-0. Any time you get one shorthanded goal, you’re putting your team in good position (I wonder how many teams have scored a shorty and lost this year), but when you get two, that’s lights-out.

• Miikka Kiprusoff had another solid effort, making 22 saves on 24 shots, and one of the goals he conceded was entirely not his fault. (More on that in a second)

• Mike Cammalleri continued his hot streak, scoring a goal and adding an assist. Rene Bourque had an identical scoring line.

• Breakout game for Matt Lombardi? A goal and two assists is a good night for anyone, but Lombardi’s been struggling to do anything well for an entire game all season. He was a force last night and finished plus-4.

The Bad

• Jarome Iginla continues to be invisible. He had four shots on goal and was a minus-2.

• Todd Bertuzzi also sucked once again. Minus-2 as well, and one shot on goal.

The Ugly

• Dion Phaneuf’s atrocious odd-man coverage directly led to the second Montreal goal. Granted he also scored in the game, but that was embarrassing. Memo to Dion: When you’re caught on a 2-on-1, it’s a pretty good idea to take away the pass instead of attempting to play the body. You left your goaltender dead to rights. He had ZERO chance of stopping that shot.
