The draft is an incredibly busy time for NHL general managers. If you’ve ever taken a draft in in person, you’ll know that it’s a bustling hub of activity. We often get reports of GMs chatting with one another throughout the entire event, though a lot of the time, it doesn’t really turn into anything.
And then, there’s the possibility of simply dialling the wrong number, like Brad Treliving evidently did.
It’s actually a pretty neat look at the draft floor brought to us by the Canucks – nothing scandalous, but interesting – but the portion relevant to us is linked just up above. It appears the Canucks accidentally caught a bit of Treliving trading for Travis Hamonic on day two of the draft, as when attempting to call Garth Snow, Treliving got a divisional general manager instead.
And then called right back just to mess around. Everyone’s friends here!
Also, we all make mistakes, some a lot less harmful than others (though it would be interesting to know how many deals were made – or fell through – due to an accidental phone call).
Treliving and Benning have only made two trades since taking the helms of the Flames and Canucks, respectively: Sven Baertschi for a second round pick back in 2015, and Markus Granlund for Hunter Shinkaruk in 2016. Since then he’s made two separate trades with the Senators and Coyotes, so maybe he just wanted to catch up with Benning; it’s been some time, after all.
