The Flames’ resurgence that coincided with the return of head coach Darryl Sutter has quickly dissipated. The team posted wins in four of its first five outings with Sutter behind the bench, including victories in three of four home contests.
However, the team has struggled since opening its recent four-game road trip with a 4-3 win in Toronto. With warning signs already present after the team mustered just 18 shots in its win over the Maple Leafs, the Flames’ offense has sputtered, potting just two total goals while losing their past three outings.
Calgary enters Friday night’s action stalled in sixth place in the North Division standings, and leads last-place Ottawa by just five points after being swept in a two-game series with the Senators this week. With the Flames’ playoff hopes quickly fading, speculation has heated up over Sam Bennett’s future with the club. The former fourth overall pick has been the subject of trade rumors all season, but remains a -240 wager at online sports betting sites to remain with the Flames beyond the trade deadline.
While the Flames vie for their fifth win in eight home outings, the Jets arrive in town as +105 underdogs despite riding a two-game win streak. Winnipeg continues an important seven-game road trip after dominating in a pair of lopsided wins in Vancouver earlier this week. With netminder Connor Hellebuyck flashing the form that made him a Vezina Trophy winner last season, the Jets outscored the Canucks by a wide 9-1 margin in their two victories.
This week’s success marks a turnaround for Winnipeg, which had failed to win consecutive games during a preceding 3-4-1 run, and potted just nine total goals in its previous four contests. Hellebuyck stopped 59 of 60 total shots in this week’s victories, which also ended a stretch of eight straight starts in which he surrendered at least three goals. The 27-year-old has also suffered just one regulation loss in his past six meetings with the Flames, but has not earned a win at the Saddledome since January 2018.
Now sitting just two points back of first-place Toronto in the North Division standings, the Jets have taken three of five from Calgary so far this season, with each of those victories coming by a single goal.
