Jonas Hiller leaves game with apparent injury

This Flames at Senators game has been absolutely insane. Filled with rapid fire goals and terrible defence and goaltending a like, the Flames had just give up quick back-to-back crease scrambles – which naturally led to goals – when Michael Frolik shoved Bobby Ryan into Jonas Hiller, taking the latter two players out of the game.

Ryan returned to the ice a few minutes later, but as it stands for the Flames, Joni Ortio is in net, and looks poised to finish the game.

For some reason, Ryan was called for goaltender interference on the play, even though Frolik pretty clearly pushed him into his goalie. There was no malice to be found; rather, the entire affair was the result of extremely frantic, out of control hockey.

But of course, Sam Bennett scored his first NHL goal 12 seconds into the ensuing powerplay, tying the game at 4.

Hiller wasn’t having the best game, but as he has yet to return to the ice, it appears as though it’s Ortio’s game to finish. Since the game-winning goal should be scored with him in net, he’ll take either the win or loss.

There’s no word yet on the severity of Hiller’s injury, but if he’s out long-term, well, hey – the Flames have Karri Ramo ready to return to the NHL. He has played just 20 minutes of AHL action, making six saves and allowing no goals against with Stockton.

UPDATE: So Hiller, indeed, did not finish the game, and Ortio was saddled with the loss, which seems awfully unfair… but that’s how it goes.

That doesn’t sound particularly good, but there’s nothing definitive there. Ramo’s fate will hang in the balance throughout the night.
