Former Flames netminder Jonas Hiller retires at age 38

Former Calgary Flames goaltender, Jonas Hiller, announced earlier this week that he’ll be hanging up the skates after this shortened season. Perhaps one of the most well-dressed tenders of all time, Hiller has been playing for the EHC Biel-Bienne of the Swiss National League A for the past four seasons since leaving the Flames back in 2015-16.

On July 1, 2014, Jonas Hiller signed a two-year contract as an unrestricted free agent with the Calgary Flames at an annual average of $4.5 million. Hiller took over as the Flames starter immediately, starting 52 games for Calgary during the 2014-15 season; sporting a .918 save percentage and a 2.36 goals against average. The Swiss netminder also helped the Flames reach the second round, boasting a .919 SV% and a 2.61 GAA. Unfortunately, Hiller’s vertigo-like symptoms worsened during the goalie’s second season, resulting in his play and numbers to crash down to league-worst.

After the 2015-16 season, the Flames opted not to re-sign Hiller or Rämö. On Apr. 19, 2016,  Hiller agreed to a three-year contract with EHC Biel of the NLA worth CHF 2.1 million. Since then, Hiller has played outstanding hockey for Biel and also was an MVP level goaltender for Team Switzerland in the 2018 Winter Olympics, posting a .956 save % and a 1.14 GAA in four games. Prior to the start of the 2019-20 season, Hiller stated that it would be his last, hoping for a championship run during his final year in hockey. Unfortunately, due to the rising concerns surrounding COVD-19. the NLA has canceled the remainder of their season.
