The Calgary Flames’ full roster – granted, short a few regular bodies – hit the ice on Friday for the first time in an official capacity since mid-April. While it’s very early and there isn’t a ton of big shiny news to chew on yet, thanks to a few media colleagues we do have some interesting tidbits to share.

Very early lines

Via Derek Wills of Sportsnet 960 The Fan (and Pat Steinberg), here are the lines from Team Murzyn, the veteran group:
Johnny Gaudreau – Sean Monahan – Elias Lindholm
Sam Bennett – Mikael Backlund – Michael Frolik
Milan Lucic – Derek Ryan – Devante Smith-Pelly
Dillon Dube – Mark Jankowski – Austin Czarnik
Zac Rinaldo – Alan Quine – Tobias Rieder
Mark Giordano –  TJ Brodie
Noah Hanifin – Travis Hamonic
Oliver Kylington – Rasmus Andersson
Andrew MacDonald – Michael Stone
David Rittich
Cam Talbot
Jon Gillies
Sure, the Flames don’t have regular forwards Andrew Mangiapane and Matthew Tkachuk, so the forward lines are a bit wonky. But they’re not awful. If you potentially shuffle a few bodies down the rotation once those gentlemen are signed, the team actually looks pretty solid. The defensive group is without Juuso Valimaki, but those four pairings seem Game 1 ready.
Let’s assume that Tkachuk replaces Smith-Pelly on PP1 once he signs: these groups make a lot o sense, albeit PP1 is pretty light on right shots.

Fitness testing

Giordano and Frolik being among the most fit veterans is about as surprising as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west – and it at least shows that Giordano didn’t spend his post-Norris summer partying. Couldn’t hurt to utilize some of the fitness training techniques, like the personalized ones at https://www.leofitlabs.com/san-diego-ca/personal-training/, if individual players hope to move up the ranks.  But let’s give props to Rieder for showing up in great shape to his PTO, Dube for showing up in great shape to potentially grab an NHL job, and Hamilton for showing up in great shape to his first NHL camp as a pro.
