NHL History: Four Rob Ramage assists help Calgary Flames complete 1989 sweep of LA Kings

As the Calgary Flames embarked on their Stanley Cup run of 1989, one of the clubs they had to roll through was the Los Angeles Kings.

And 31 years ago today, with a little bit of help from Rob Ramage, the Flames completed their Smythe Division finals sweep of the Kings.

Calgary made quick work of the Kings outscoring them 22-11 in four games led offensively by Doug Gilmour, Joe Mullen and Gary Roberts who each scored seven points, while Ramage and Al MacInnis had six and five points, respectively.

Ramage’s game four performance saw him chip in four assists en route to helping Calgary complete the sweep.

He helped on the Flames first two goals of the game, scored by Mullen and Roberts at the 7:24 and 8:34 mark, while getting another assist on a Joe Nieuwendyk goal in the last minute of the second.

In period three, Ramage got an assist on a Roberts empty-net goal to seal the victory.

By the time the Flames hoisted lord Stanley, he ended up totaling 12 points in 20 games.

Originally acquired by the Flames on March 7, 1988, along with Rick Wamsley from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Steve Bozek and Brett Hull, Ramage left the Flames after the cup title.

Calgary had flipped him to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 1989 second-round pick, who Calgary used to select Kent Manderville.
