Wow. Just wow.
If there is any truth to this business involving Patrick Kane over the weekend then he seriously needs to be beaten within an inch of his life by someone who has the ability to get through to him.
For those of you who may not have witnessed the further decline of Pro Athletes as role models, here is what went down as reported by TSN:
“Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane was charged with attacking a cab driver in his home town Sunday, a beating police said was triggered when the driver did not have 20 cents in change to give the player and his cousin.
Buffalo police said the 20-year-old Kane and his 21-year-old cousin, James Kane, had apparently caught a cab from the city’s downtown nightclub district at about 4 a.m. ET. The cab driver suffered cuts to his face and his glasses were damaged, police spokesman Michael DeGeorge said.
Both men were charged with felony robbery and misdemeanour counts of theft of services and criminal mischief. Patrick Kane, who earned US$875,000 last season, pleaded not guilty in local court Sunday, WIVB-TV reported. It was not immediately clear when James Kane will appear in court.”

A black mark for a franchise turning the corner

It’s refreshing to see a team in the NHL that is having a worse offseason than the Oil isn’t it? Since the death of Dollar Bill Wirtz, former owner of the Blackhawks, Wirtz’s son Rocky has piloted the SS Blackhawk into new territory – renewed fan interest, sell out crowds and a fantastic product on the ice. The Hawks have gone from missing the playoffs in 07-08 to losing in the Western Finals last year, largely on the backs of Kane and Toews. The Hawks have been heavily promoting the two players in an attempt to lure Chicago-onians back to the United Center. This news must come as a welcome development to the future of these efforts.
At a time when both American Hockey and the Blackhawks looked to the 2008 Calder Trophy winner as one of their bright stars, Kane has easily taken the “Most Embarassing thing an NHL player can get arrested for Trophy” from Ed Belfour, who was famously arrested back in 2007 after beating up a security guard at a Dallas Hotel and promptly offered his arresting officer “a billion dollars” for his release.
As groans of disgust and dozens of facepalms were heard coming from Blackhawk team offices over the weekend, one cautious staffer issued the following statement:
“He is a big part of our organization and a team leader and we stand behind him,” spokesman Brandon Faber said. “As we are still collecting all the facts, it would be premature to comment further at this time.”

Unbelievably lame

Patrick. First you cry on national TV when Coach Denis Savard was fired. We all had a good laugh at your expense on that one. Now this? How you have managed to make Plaxico Burress look positively rocket scientist-esque by comparison is amazing. Burress, ex New York Giant and former Superbowl Hero is now facing at least 3 1/2 years in prison after shooting himself in the leg with an illegal handgun in a club in November. Facing jail time for shooting someone is a dumb enough move. When that someone you shot is yourself, you need to look the gene pool in the eye and wonder how you escaped from the primordial soup. Topping that level of stupidity is breathtaking and we have to hand it to Kane for even making an attempt.

Roenick out – Next Gen of American Stars step up

With Jeremy Roenick – one of the highest profile American Hockey players around – retiring last week and with Chelios and Modano aging at a prodigious rate, players like Kane are set to take the stage as the Premiere American talent in an era when the NHL needs American born heroes and fast. Looks like things are going well from where we sit.
Beating up a cabbie?
What a douche.
Seriously.
