Post-Game: Kid Gloves

The Calgary Flames finished off the regular season portion of the 2014-15 campaign this afternoon. Many regular players sat. They lost 5-1 to the Winnipeg Jets, who also sat several regulars.
The game didn’t really matter for either team. It was all about resting regulars in preparation for the playoffs and trying not to get anybody injured in the process.
The Flames finish off their regular season with a 45-30-7 record.

THE RUNDOWN

The game started off with a bit of excitement, as Sam Bennett stole the puck from Michael Hutchinson after a dump-in and chucked the puck out front, where it bonked in off of a charging Michael Ferland. Ferland’s from Manitoba, so it was pretty cool for him to get a goal. However, Drew Stafford scored immediately afterwards – Joni Ortio couldn’t glove his shot fully and it trickled in – to tie the game at 1-1. That’s how things ended in the first. Shots were 10-8 for the Jets.
Nobody scored in the second period. The game was pretty even, and the Flames kids generated some decent chances. Shots were 10-5 for the Flames, and Hutchinson was pretty damn good for the Jets in this frame.
Michael Frolik scored the eventual game-winner early in the first period off a nice pass from Mark Scheifele. Lee Stempniak and Adam Lowry scored mid-period goals a minute apart to give the Jets some breathing room, and Matt Halischuk scored late to ice the game completely. Shots were 7-7 in the third, but the Jets got the better chances and buried them.

WHY THE FLAMES LOST

Well, the Flames best players sat – no Brodie, Gaudreau, Hudler, Monahan, Russell, Jones or Wideman – and, shockingly, Calgary’s third pairing and depth defenders weren’t quite good enough at disrupting Winnipeg’s attack as they needed to be. The defensive situation for the Flames wasn’t great today. Joni Ortio has had better games, and that first goal from Stafford was a groaner, but he didn’t get much help. (It was also his first game since late February, so let’s cut him some slack.)

RED WARRIOR

Another good game for Michael Ferland. He had the lone goal on a smart play going to the net, but he also had 3 shots (second behind Drew Shore on the team) and 4 hits.
And a stick-tap to Sam Bennett, who was energetic all afternoon.
