Prospect Round-Up (October 10 2014)

The Calgary Flames have many prospects playing in many different leagues. With so much action going on in far-flung parts of North America and the world, it can be hard to keep track.

Here’s a quick rundown of how the Flames prospects kids did tonight.

AHL: The Adirondack Flames began their existence with a tough 6-1 loss at the hands of the Rochester Americans. For the Flames, Joni Ortio made 27 stops on 33 shots and Kenny Agostino scored his first AHL goal, but the Amerks were just too much for the fledgling Flames. Chad Ruhwedel had three points while WHL alum Nathan Nieuwen made 26 saves for the win. The game got ugly late, with the thing out of hand score-wise and a lot of fisticuffs and stupidity otherwise.

Trevor Gillies is considered by the AHL Twitterverse to be a strong candidate for suspension for slamming a dude’s face into the ice during/after a fight (he got 27 PIMs), and Kenny Agostino and Brett Kulak got tossed from the game late for having secondary fights late in the game. The Flames are back at it tomorrow night in Glens Falls against Albany.

WHL: I was at the Victoria Royals visit to Calgary this evening, as they beat the Hitmen 3-2 in a nice come-from-behind effort. The Royals really got better as the game got going, and Austin Carroll was pretty strong on the puck after giving it up a lot in the first half of the game. He tipped-in the game-winning goal. Keegan Kanzig was big, was +1 and took a dumb check-from-behind penalty in the second period.

OHL: Hunter Smith was all over the scoresheet for the Oshawa Generals tonight. He took two minor penalties in the first half of the game. Then he scored late in the second to tie the Generals with the Plymouth Whalers 1-1, and then scored again in the third as part of an offensive explosion. His third-period power-play goal stood as the game-winner in Oshawa’s 5-3 triumph over the Whalers.

QMJHL: Charlottetown lost 3-2 to Halifax. Mason McDonald stopped 27 of 30 shots he faced. He’s 3-4-0 with a 3.46 goals against average and a .898 save percentage in 7 starts. The Islanders sit 7th overall in the Q with a 5-3-1-1 record.

ECAC: Colgate beat St. Cloud State 3-1. The ECAC website doesn’t have much information on the game beyond a quick summary. Tim Harrison played, and I presume he played well enough that his team won.

Hockey East: Boston University laid a beating on U-Mass, beating them 8-1. Yes, they won by a converted touchdown. Flames third-rounder Brandon Hickey had no points in his official NCAA debut, but he was +3 in the win. Meanwhile, the Providence College Friars lost a tough one against Ohio State, dropping a 5-4 overtime contest. John Gilmour missed the game due to injury, but Mark Jankowski had an assist and was +1 and Jon Gillies made 20 saves on 25 shots (giving up 5 goals) for the loss. Both Jankowski and Gillies are coming off off-season hip maladies, but I’m not sure if those impacted their performances.
