Prospects Klimchuk, McDonald Injured

While the big club is vying for a playoff berth, a few of the Calgary Flames’ top prospects are presently in the post-season of their various leagues.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that two of them are presently injured, coincidentally both becoming injured in Game 3 of their particular playoff series. Both Morgan Klimchuk of the Brandon Wheat Kings and Mason McDonald of the Charlottetown Islanders are presently on the shelf.

Per Bruce Luebke, the radio voice of the What Kings:

Klimchuk missed Game 4 against Edmonton last night and was said to be in discomfort after a collision into the boards during the first period (also per Luebke’s Twitter). Brandon’s up 3-1 in their series and is expected to advance, but there’s no official update as of yet regarding Klimchuk’s status or timelines. You may recall that he missed the end of pre-season and the beginning of the WHL regular season with what was thought to be a wrist injury.

McDonald, on the other hand, was injured in the first period of Charlottetown’s 5-2 win over Sherbrooke on Monday night. John Moore, the radio voice of the Halifax Mooseheads, had the scoop on his status.

I really don’t like that “perhaps longer,” as it may be an indication that the Islanders might need to shut him down for the rest of the playoffs. Knees are tricky things – ask Brent Krahn – so this is pretty bad news for both the Flames and McDonald, who was having a very strong season in the Q.
