The Calgary Flames lost to the Washington Capitals by a 4-3 score (in a shootout) on Saturday afternoon. Here are selected reactions from players and coaches following the game.
“I thought all night he was making plays. Again, I thought his biggest asset is his poise with the puck. Really good shot, really good tip. I thought we didn’t panic there. We held the puck, we made a couple D to Ds and when it opened up, he let a great shot go.” – Flames captain Mark Giordano on Rasmus Andersson’s first career NHL assist on the game-tying goal.
“I thought as the game went on, especially as the game went on, we got even better and better in our own zone. I felt like we were making cleaner plays. It showed. We tied the game up for a reason.” – Giordano on his club’s defensive play against Washington.
“All of those things are what it’s going to take to win, to get points. Especially after what happened last game, it shows a lot about the character of this group to respond like we did against a really good hockey team. A point’s still a point, you can’t be too disappointed. We were losing with a minute left in the game, so to tie it up and give yourself a chance to get two was huge for this group and we have to just keep pushing that forward.” – Flames netminder Mike Smith on the team’s overall play against Washington, with improvements from their goaltending, special teams and defensive play.
“We were much better in our own zone tonight. We got loose a little bit in the third there. Smitty made a big save on I believe it was on Oshie. We were trying to get it tied up right away there, and you don’t have to. You have to stay patient. We had some good looks ourselves. Dube had a chance. Monahan had a chance. We had some stuff in around the net. You don’t want it to go to 4-2 and Smitty did a good job shutting the door.” – Flames head coach Bill Peters on his club’s defensive play against Washington.
