The Calgary Flames lost to the San Jose Sharks by a 3-1 score on Sunday night. Here are selected reactions from players and coaches following the game.

Mike Smith answers Big Save Dave’s performance

On Saturday night in Anaheim, David Rittich made 21 saves for his first career shutout. Mike Smith made 26 saves on Sunday night and got the same run support that Rittich did 24 hours prior – one goal – but also played behind a team that was a bit sloppier with the puck.
“I didn’t think we had everybody start on time,” said Flames head coach Bill Peters. “Obviously, right, I thought our start was poor. And I thought Smitty gave us the chance to make that push in the third. Real good effort by him to allow us to try to squeak one out. But it didn’t happen.”
Flames captain Mark Giordano also praised his netminder’s performance.
“Especially in the second, it felt like we turned it over way too much and Smitty held us in with some huge saves,” said Giordano. “In the third we obviously had a lot of chances and it didn’t go in the net.”

The missed delay of game call

There were a few instances in the third period where the Sharks could’ve been given a penalty. But the Flames generated zero power plays on the night, even after Evander Kane swatted the puck out of the air… and into the crowd with 1:05 remaining in regulation, which probably should’ve resulted in a Sharks delay of game penalty.
As you would expect, Peters wasn’t exactly thrilled with the lack of a penalty call in that situation.
There’s four guys there, right? There’s four guys there, it’s an important time in the game, in my opinion, and the guy knocks it out of the zone. And if a guy knocks it out of the zone, it’s typically a penalty in the D-zone. And if it’s us [who knocked the puck out], the face-off doesn’t stay where it was… You’ve gotta have the courage to make the call. You’ve got to have courage and your conviction. You know who knocked it out, make the call.
