The Calgary Flames played their first game of consequence since August on Thursday night as they began their 2020-21 NHL season. After leading 3-1 after the first period, they lost 4-3 to the Winnipeg Jets in overtime.
Here are some selected quotes from the post-game media addresses.

Geoff Ward

The Flames were strong in the first period, but the little things they were doing well like short passes didn’t seem to connect as well. Ward was asked what the difference was between the first period performance and the rest of the game.
Well, they came with a push to start the second period, obviously. They got a goal on the first shift and that put us back on our heels a little bit. I thought it was tough for us to get momentum back. We took three penalties in a row there and they got some momentum again off their power play.
You know, the biggest thing for us in the second and third, I think really, we weren’t winning as many battles and races in the first couple periods. Also, we got disconnected. We started trying to make the long pass way too much and you said it, in the first period we were making the short pass, we were coming to support underneath. We were doing a lot of little things really well in small spaces. In the second and third period, that changed.
Now, saying that, we did enough to hang on and get a point and probably they were the better team in the second and third. We’ll take the point and we’ll move on, but this may be what we’re going to see early from all the teams. I’ve been watching a lot of games and it seems like it’s one way, it’s another way as teams try to find their way and try to get their game in order without any exhibition games.

Rasmus Andersson

Thursday night was the first game on Andersson’s new contract and he spent it on the top pairing with Mark Giordano. Andersson played 23:58, the most of any Flames skater by over two minutes and the sixth-most he’s ever played in a single game. (His career high is 26:04.) He was asked to reflect on his own play in the game.
If I’m honest with you, I felt okay. I thought I was a little sloppy with the puck here and there, and I had a few turnovers here and there. You know, it’s the first real game in a long time so, physically I felt good. I’ve just got to get a little sharper, I think. That’s gonna come with obviously playing a little bit more games here down the road. My honest opinion is I just played okay.
