Quotable: the Flames lose to the Canucks 3-1

3 years agoOn Thursday, the Calgary Flames were lousy early on but figured things out. On Saturday, they were lousy early and remained lousy in front of goaltender Jacob Markstrom. The Flames were the second-best team in a 3-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

Sean Monahan
Monahan was asked about the team’s consistent performance – in that they were bad from start to finish. (They were out-shot and out-chanced in all three periods, per Natural Stat Trick.)
Yeah, we weren’t good. Power play wasn’t good at all. Execution was off. And when you’re playing like that, you’ve just got to play simple and we’ve got to up our compete level. So, I mean, it’s not a game that we want but we’ve got to learn from that real quick.
Mark Giordano
The Flames have had plenty of games where they had bad starts – Thursday, for instance. But on Saturday, they couldn’t make the necessary adjustments.
We didn’t handle the puck at all today. I think, starting with myself and the D on the back end and right through our lineup, we weren’t making clean plays and too many times the puck was turned over. That’s the bottom line. You’re not going to win when you play like that. I thought that was a tough night for us. Marky kept us in it and, really, it sucks that we didn’t get at least a point out of it after that performance.
Geoff Ward
Asked about the root of his team’s lack of adjustments, Ward summed it up as “We weren’t competitive.” Subsequently, he elaborated a little bit on what went awry for his club.
I thought we were slow everywhere, to be honest with you. We weren’t skating and it was evident and they were able to get a forecheck. But, you know, the game’s fair. The game’s fair. We got what we deserved tonight. We got out-worked, out-skated, out-competed, so usually when that happens you don’t get the result you want.
Later on, Ward agreed with an assessment that the team’s details were lacking. He added that he had concerns about his team about 10 minutes into the first period.
Ward had no updates on Mikael Backlund’s injury post-game.
