Report: Dillon Dube and Andrew Mangiapane invited to represent Canada at World Championship

Calgary’s former Captain Canada is returning to the international stage, likely being joined by a fellow Flames teammate.

Dillon Dube, who won a gold medal at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship while serving as Team Canada’s captain, will reportedly soon be heading to Riga, Latvia to represent his home country at the 2021 IIHF World Championship. Andrew Mangiapane, who hasn’t played for Hockey Canada yet in his career, has also reportedly earned an invite.

This will be Dube’s first international tournament since he started playing professionally in 2018–19. The 22-year-old Golden, BC product also wore the maple leaf at the 2017 World Juniors (winning a silver medal) and the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament (taking home gold).

Dube has 19 points (10 goals, nine assists) in 47 games as a sophomore with the Flames this season. He has averaged 13:45 of total ice-time per game while accumulating a sum of 2.0 Goals Above Replacement, according to Evolving-Hockey. Dube scored his first NHL hat trick in a 6-1 Flames win over the Ottawa Senators on Mar. 4, 2021.

Mangiapane, 25, has quietly emerged as perhaps the Flames’ top 200-foot player over the past few seasons. He has 13 goals and 27 points in 52 games this season. As noted, this will be his first international excursion playing for Team Canada.

The Flames organization currently has three players set to attend the 2021 Worlds. Emilio Pettersen, the Flames’ sixth-round pick from the 2018 draft who just completed his rookie professional season with the Stockton Heat, will play for Norway at the tournament.

Calgary’s season is scheduled to end on May 19 with a matinee game against the Vancouver Canucks at 1:30 pm MT. The Worlds will begin on May 21 and are set to conclude on Jun. 6.
