The trade deadline is less than one week away and trade chatter is heating up. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Calgary Flames seem to be in on just about everybody.
Most of the Flames mentions from Friedman in the newest edition of 31 Thoughts relate to the team’s quest for more scoring:
  • They’re a “stealth suitor” for Ottawa forward Matt Duchene, in the sense that Nashville and Columbus are getting the most attention as potential destinations but the Flames could be a fit.
  • If Mark Stone doesn’t agree to a deal with Ottawa, the Flames (and Winnipeg) are “definitely there” as potential destinations.
  • Relating Nick Kypreos’ assertion from Saturday’s Headlines that James Neal “will be out awhile,” Friedman ponders if the Flames utilize the LTIR loophole that Chicago exploited in the 2015 playoffs – they put Patrick Kane on LTIR, used his entire cap relief on multiple players to replace him during the season, then were able to keep those players in the playoffs and activate Kane because there’s no salary cap in the playoffs.
  • The Flames are among the teams who’ve looked into NY Rangers’ Mats Zuccarello and Philadelphia’s Wayne Simmonds.
  • Colorado’s Patrik Nemeth mentioned as a potential target for a depth defender for the Flames.
  • Friedman mentioned that Flames GM Brad Treliving “is very careful when discussing his goaltending situation,” as he doesn’t want to rattle the confidence of either Mike Smith or David Rittich.
Given how active the Flames appear to be with kicking tires on potential deals, it seems likely that they’ll be active before the 1 p.m. MT trade deadline on Feb. 25.
