Folks, the Calgary Flames have signed another former Vancouver Canuck. The latest installment of the “If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em” 2020 off-season is winger Josh Leivo, who has signed a one year deal worth $875,000.
Leivo, 27, is an Ontario boy originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round of the 2011 NHL Draft. He’s played basically all of his pro hockey in Toronto (for the Leafs or Marlies) or Vancouver (for the Canucks). He was an NHL/AHL tweener for four seasons before becoming a full-time NHLer in 2017-18. Leivo had 19 points in 36 NHL games last season. He’s got 65 points in 169 NHL games overall.
Leivo was seventh among Canucks forwards in average five-on-five ice time (behind Toffoli, Miller, Pettersson, Horvat, Boeser and Pearson), and sixth in average power play ice time among forwards. He has killed penalties in the past, but didn’t do it a ton last season. He’s a right shot winger who tends to play the left side, but can play on the right as needed. He’s an inexpensive add who gives the Flames some extra lineup flexibility. He’s had positive relative shot impacts at the NHL level fairly consistently since he became a fully-fledged NHLer.
He’s coming off a kneecap injury that sidelined him in December, but word is he’s fully recovered.
For reference, here are the Flames currently signed to one-way deals:
  • Goalies (2): Jacob Markstrom and David Rittich
  • Defensemen (5): Mark Giordano, Rasmus Andersson, Noah Hanifin, Chris Tanev and Nikita Nesterov
  • Forwards (12) Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Elias Lindholm, Matthew Tkachuk, Mikael Backlund, Andrew Mangiapane, Sam Bennett, Milan Lucic, Derek Ryan, Joakim Nordstrom, Dominik Simon and Buddy Robinson
