Report: Andrei Kostitsyn Joins Flames on PTO (Update: Andrei, Not Sergei)

As we get ready for hockey to begin tomorrow, we have a report of some minor news.

Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal is reporting that forward Sergei Kostitsyn is joining the Calgary Flames for training camp on a professional try-out agreement (PTO).

The 28-year-old product of Navapolatsk, Belarus was originally drafted in the 2005 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He’s racked up 176 points in 353 NHL contests with Montreal and the Nashville Predators. Following a stint in the KHL during the 2012-13 lockout, he returned there for the 2013-14 season. He’s played for Avangard Osmk and Ak Bars Kazan in the K, putting up 89 points in 130 games.

However, it appears some issues regarding the import status of Belorussians in the KHL has freed him up from his previous commitment to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod.

I’m not sure where he fits in Calgary’s system, but at the very least he’s an established player with some skill who can push some veterans (and youngsters) for jobs.

UPDATE: Kostitsyn is currently on Torpedo’s roster and played a couple days ago, so who knows what happens here. That’s why it’s a “report,” I suppose.

Update (again): Matheson tweeted that it’s Andrei who’s on the PTO with Calgary, not Sergei (as he originally reported).

Update (yet again): And Andrei played in the KHL today as well. Both Kostitsyns have deals with Torpedo, so unless something changes drastically, I don’t think either is coming here.
