As the beginning of main camp creeps closer, more details on veteran bodies attending camp are slowly becoming available. Today, Swedish publication Hockeysverige has reported that veteran blueliner Viktor Svedberg will be attending Calgary Flames camp on a professional tryout agreement.
Originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, Svedberg is arguably best known for his time with the Chicago Blackhawks. The 27-year-old was signed as a European free agent by the Hawks back in 2013 after impressing during a tryout stint with the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs. Since coming over to North America, the towering blueliner has emerged as a very good AHL hand but failed to make much noise at the NHL level.
In five North American seasons the 6’9″, 235 pound Svedberg has 73 points in 248 AHL games and four points in 27 NHL games. He’ll be useful depth during the preseason, and potentially could creep into the conversation as a leader for the Stockton Heat given his experience level in the minors, but he doesn’t seem like somebody who will really make waves in main camp and challenge for a big club job.
Update: The Athletic’s Scott Powers has confirmed the PTO with Svedberg’s agent.
