The ascension of Sean Monahan continues.
After spending his first two seasons in the National Hockey League quietly becoming an offensive powerhouse and a quiet locker room leader, the Calgary Flames today announced that the centerman has been named an alternate captain.
The 21-year-old (22 later this month) Ontario native has been one of the bigger drafting success stories in recent Flames history. The first of three first rounders the Flames had in 2013, Monahan made the jump directly from junior to the NHL and bucked the sophomore slump trend last season by posting a 31-goal, 31-assist season that saw him get votes for both the Lady Byng and the Selke Trophy.
He replaces linemate Jiri Hudler as a full-time alternate captain – try not to read into it, the captains are chosen by the players. Matt Stajan has also worn a letter in the past, usually due to injury to one of the regulars.
