Should Leon Draisaitl face discipline for hit on Matthew Tkachuk?

The first 2018-19 installment of the Battle of Alberta on Saturday night started off with a heated first period. Much of the bad blood was a result of a hit by Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl on Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk.

Tkachuk went down and was slow to leave the ice. He left the game briefly and returned midway through the first period. Draisaitl was given a two minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and could be seen apologizing to Tkachuk as he entered the penalty box.

The key bone of contention here will likely be the contact between Draisaitl’s feet and Tkachuk’s, as that’s what sent him down to the ice in such an uncontrolled manner – the term “slew foot” was bandied about. Every incident in every game is reviewed by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, with injury, in-game penalties and player history taken into account when determining any potential supplemental discipline. Draisaitl hasn’t been fined in his NHL career, but was fined during the 2017 playoffs for a spearing incident involving San Jose’s Chris Tierney.

Should Draisaitl be given any additional discipline for this collision? Or was the in-game penalty sufficient?
