Just a little over one month after Sportsnet agreed to an 11-year extension for the television rights of the Calgary Flames, Sportsnet 960 announced they will continue as the radio destination for the team.
Sportsnet 960 The FAN will continue its coverage of the Flames, providing live play-by-play from Derek Wills and colour commentary from Meghan Mikkelson for every game all season long, with host Pat Steinberg.
While the announcement did not come with any specific information on the length of the extension for radio, the television rights deal will keep Flames regional coverage on Sportsnet through 2035.
Sportsnet has been the home of Flames regional television broadcasts ever since its inception in 1998. Radio broadcasts soon migrated to 960 AM from 660 AM upon 960’s transition to full-time sports radio.
“Sportsnet has been providing Flames fans with the very best content and coverage of our team for many years and we are thrilled to extend our broadcast relationship for eleven more,” said Flames president and CEO John Bean in a statement on Rogers Sports and Media upon the announcement of the extended TV deal. “Our partners at Sportsnet know the game and are as passionate about hockey and the Flames as our fans. We are proud to have a broadcast partner that is so committed to our brand and presenting Flames hockey to our loyal fans.”
Sportsnet radio has a host of different Calgary Flames shows within its network.
Pat Steinberg, Aaron Vickers and Wes Gilbertson host “Flames Talk”, which includes post-game shows, news and in-depth analysis. George Rusic and Matt Rose lead “The Big Show With Rusic and Rose” every weekday from 6 am to 9 am MT, providing the biggest Flames stories at the start of the day. Eric Francis & Hailey Salvian cover the biggest Flames and hockey stories of the day on “Hockey Central 960.” And Logan Gordon hosts “Sportsnet Today 960”, which brings the latest in all Calgary sports.
“The Calgary Flames have been an important part of Sportsnet’s programming for 25 years and we look forward to continuing this partnership for many years to come,” said Sportsnet president Greg Sansone, when the deal TV was extended. “A big thank you to Flames chairman Murray Edwards, team president John Bean, and everyone throughout the organization for trusting us to be the destination for Calgary hockey fans.”
