7 years agoThe National Hockey League trade deadline is rapidly approaching. As the Calgary Flames prepare for the chaos that always comes on March 1, we felt it was prudent to revisit an old resource and update it.
Curious as to how long it’s been since the Flames made a swap with the other 29 NHL clubs? We dug into it and have a handy tracker for you.
The Rundown
Transactions in bold were made by current Flames general manager Brad Treliving.

Some Notes
Treliving has traded with Vancouver twice, Arizona twice and Florida twice.
If you smush all of Brad’s moves into one big trade:
Assets Out | Assets In |
Curtis Glencross Jiri Hudler Kris Russell David Jones Patrick Sieloff Sven Baertschi Max Reinhart Markus Granlund 2014 third round pick 2015 first round pick 2015 third round pick cond. 2017 seventh round pick 2017 third round pick cond. 2018 third round pick cond. 2018 fifth round pick future considerations | Dougie Hamilton Brian Elliott Alex Chiasson Michael Stone Jyrki Jokipakka Brandon Bollig Freddie Hamilton Niklas Backstrom Kevin Poulin Hunter Shinkaruk Brett Pollock 2015 second round pick cond. 2016 fourth round pick 2016 second round pick 2016 sixth round pick 2018 fourth round pick |
Treliving’s credo over the past three seasons seems to be “If we don’t have plans for somebody, let’s get something back for them.” As a result, the Flames managed to flip a lot of assets from the Jay Feaster regime for draft picks and then either use those picks outright (taking Rasmus Andersson and Matthew Phillips, among others), use them to move up (they traded up to draft Oliver Kylington) or use them to solve other problems (acquiring Dougie Hamilton and Brian Elliott).
