This week in 1924, the Western Canada Hockey League’s Calgary Tigers fell to the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanely Cup final. alt

Conquired for the second time by Les Canadiens in the world’s championship hockey series, the Calgary Tigers are now winding their way back to the foot of the Rockies, minues the much cherished Stanley Cup prize. They lost 3-0 to the Flying Frenchmen in the game last night on Ottawa ice. They fell before a fine combination of championship hockey timber. They were beaten by a worth title set, a team that fought back gamely with Vezina in the nets as the outstanding star.

The Tigers played out of Calgary between 1920 and 1927, then later again between 1932 and 1936. These ’24 Tigers had won both their league and the Western Canadian championship.

At the time, teams across three leagues would compete for the Cup and believe it or not, the Canadiens of 1924 were the first club to have their names engraved on the cup.

The Tigers of ’24 finished the WCHL season atop the league with an 18-11-1 record — one point higher than the Regina Capitals, who the Tigers beat in the league championship.

Leading the Tigers in points was Harry Oliver, who scored 22 goals and 34 points in 27 games.

Having beat the aforementioned Capitals, the Tigers then took on the Pacific Coast Hockey Association champion Vancouver Maroons 2-1 in a three-game series.

But those Tigers were no match for the Canadiens led in net by Georges Vezina, who only allowed one goal in the two-game sweep that finished on March 25, 1924.
