Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday! alt
Today in 1989, the Calgary Flames won game one of the Stanley Cup finals against the Montreal Canadiens.
After cruising to a 52-17-9 and beating the Vancouver Canucks, LA Kings and Chicago Blackhawks, the Flames were ready for their finals matchup against the Habs.
Montreal, however, got the first lead in the series scoring 2:43 in the first period as Stephane Richer got a powerplay tally. It didn’t last too long as Al MacInnis scored back-to-back goals. A powerplay tally came at the 6:51 mark, before he scored again at 8:33.
Larry Robinson got another goal for Montreal in that frame, but Theo Fleury’s second period goal at the 11:45 mark secured the win.
Mike Vernon was key in net, as he stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced.
