Tim Harrison joins Adirondack Thunder on a tryout

While the big fish of the collegiate signing season remain in the pond, there has been a minor signing involving a Calgary Flames draft pick. Right wing Tim Harrison, a sixth round selection in the 2013 NHL Draft, has signed an amateur try-out contract with the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL – the Flames’ minor minor-league affiliate – according to the transactions listing on the league’s site.

Harrison completed his college career last weekend as the Colgate Raiders lost in the opening round of the ECAC conference playoffs to the Princeton Tigers. Originally from Duxbury, Massachusetts, the 24-year-old Harrison was drafted by the Flames out of Dexter Prep School in his second year of eligibility.

He’s 6’3″ and over 200 pounds, and stood out at his first development camp in 2013 for his physicality, but he’s put up relatively modest offensive output for Colgate with 26 goals and 53 points in 144 games. He served as an alternate captain in his senior year with the Raiders.

An amateur try-out contract is probably the right move for Harrison. He’s probably not destined to land himself an NHL contract right now, and a stint in the ECHL could be a nice way of showing Flames brass that he’s worth signing to an American Hockey League deal for next season.

The Flames retain Harrison’s rights until August 15, at which point he becomes an unrestricted free agent if he’s not signed to an NHL contract.
