Training Camp Roster Reduced by 14

The Calgary Flames reduced their training camp roster by 14 players on Friday morning, sending all 14 players to the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League.  Of the players, Mitch Wahl is probably the most surprising to be assigned, mostly because of how he’s impressed as of late.
The players assigned are:
LW Carter Bancks
D Chris Breen
LW Lance Bouma
RW Bryan Cameron
C Hugo Carpentiet
RW Kris Chucko
LW Ryley Grantham
G J.P. Lamoureux
LW Logan MacMIllan
D Josh Meyers
D Giffen Nyren
C Gaelan Patterson
C Mitch Wahl
RW J.D. Watt
On second thought, the assignment of Mitch Wahl doesn’t surprise me that much.  Yes, he’s impressed, and yes you might think he’s a guy the Flames would give a longer look with the big club.  However, Wahl is entering his first professional season, so it makes sense to get him down to Abbotsford now.  He wasn’t going to make the Flames this season, so why bother disjointing his first pro season when you can start him in the AHL right from the beginning, so that one make sense.
Giffen Nyren has been assigned, but still does not have a permanent contract.  So, he’ll continue on his tryout agreement.  Names that remain in camp include T.J. Brodie, Matt Pelech, Gord Baldwin, John Negrin, Jon Rheault, Brett Sutter, and Cam Cunning.  We still await the status on John Armstrong, who is nursing a face injury…yep, a face injury.  That eye was swollen shut.
The Flames get set for the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night, a 7 pm start at the Saddledome.
