Upcoming Flames player milestones

The Calgary Flames are polishing off their pre-holiday schedule by Monday, and then they’re off for a few days. As we approach 2020, there are several Flames players approaching some significant personal and franchise milestones.

Mark Giordano needs to play 30 games to hit 900 as a Flame. He’s well back of Jarome Iginla’s franchise lead of 1,219, but Giordano’s putting distance between him and everybody else.

Mikael Backlund (657) is 43 games shy of 700 as a Flame. He’s 54 games behind Jim Peplinski (711) for 7th on the franchise leaderboard. TJ Brodie (602) is 15 games behind Gary Suter (617) for 9th on the franchise list. Sean Monahan (508) is six games back of Guy Chouinard (514) for 18th, and nine behind of Paul Reinhart (517) for 17th on the Flames rankings.

In net, David Rittich (95) is five games away from hitting 100. He’s two games behind Mike Smith and Rick Tabaracci (both 97) for 13th on the all-time leaderboard, 16 games back from Karri Ramo and Rick Wamsley (both 111) for 11th, and 19 games back from Don Edwards (114) for 10th. He’ll definitely be top 10 on the franchise list before the end of the season.

Talbot (298) is two games away from 300 appearances in his NHL career. Derek Ryan is 29 games away from 300 in his NHL career.

Sean Monahan (182) is the Flames’ active career leader, 18 goals shy of 200. He’s eight goals back of Joe Mullen (190) for 11th on the all-time list, and 11 goals back of Hakan Loob and Eric Vail (both 193) for 9th on that list. He’s a good bet to crack the top 10 in franchise history this season.

Giordano (336) is currently tied with Chouinard for 5th on the franchise leaderboard. His next assist gives him the 5th spot outright. After that, he’s just 100 assists behind Gary Suter (436) for 4th. Good luck, Mark.

Johnny Gaudreau (273) is three assists behind Tom Lysiak (276) for 10th and 27 assists shy of 300 for his career. Brodie (212) is two assists behind Doug Gilmour (214) for 17th. Monahan (209) is two assists behind Craig Conroy (211) for 19th, and also reeling in Brodie and Gilmour fairly quickly. It seems pretty likely that Monahan leap-frogs Brodie, Gilmour, Brodie and Conroy this season.

Noah Hanifin’s next assist will be his 100th in his NHL career.

Giordano (469) is 31 points away from 500. He’s 36 points behind Gary Roberts (505) for 8th on the Flames leaderboard.

Gaudreau (416) is eight points behind Jim Peplinski (424) for 15th, and is also closing in on Joel Otto (428), Hakan Loob (429) and Tom Lysiak (431). Realistically, he’s 15 points from tying Lysiak for 12th. Monahan (391) is nine points back from 400 in his career, and 15 points back from Lanny McDonald (406) for 17th in franchise history.

Rittich (50) is one win back from Fred Brathwaite and Pat Riggin (both 51) for 9th, and three back from Rick Wamsley (53) for 8th. He has more wins than any other Flames goaltender in the post-Kiprusoff era, which speaks to the lack of success and longevity from basically everybody else they’ve tried since Kiprusoff retired in 2013.
