As we await trade deadline developments – anything, really – a bit of news from the league office regarding the Calgary Flames. Forward Andrew Mangiapane has been named the third star of the past week.
Mangapane had five goals and six points over three games. The Flames won two of those games.
Mangiapane, 23, is in his first full NHL season after bouncing between the NHL and AHL for the past two seasons. He’s settled into a nice role on a line with Mikael Backlund and Matthew Tkachuk – and previously with Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm – and quietly been one of the team’s best even strength players.
In 61 games this season, Mangiapane has 15 goals and 27 points. He’s on a two-way deal paying him $715,000 this season. He’ll be a restricted free agent on July 1.
Mangiapane is the third Flame to be named a weekly star this season: David Rittich was named second star of the week on Dec. 2 and Cam Talbot third star on Jan. 13.
