In a week, the Calgary Flames and Andrew Mangiapane will have a new deal in place. How they get there is still yet to be determined. The NHL and NHLPA today announced their salary arbitration schedule, and Andrew Mangiapane’s hearing is set for Oct. 20.
Now, three things to bear in mind.
First, while arbitration hearings can be fairly contentious, most cases don’t end up having a hearing.
Second, in a change from previous years the new CBA extension stipulates that a case cannot be settled once it hits the hearing room.
Third, because the Flames have an arbitration case, they get access to the second buyout window. The case does not need to result in a hearing for them to have access to the buyout window.
For the curious, here’s a snapshot of the arbitration cases for the Flames since Brad Treliving became general manager:
- 2014: Joe Colborne – settled prior to hearing
- 2015: Josh Jooris – settled prior to hearing
- 2015: Paul Byron – settled prior to hearing
- 2015: Lance Bouma – settled after hearing (but before award)
- 2017: Micheal Ferland – settled prior to hearing
- 2018: Garnet Hathaway – settled prior to hearing
- 2018: Mark Jankowski – settled prior to hearing
- 2018: Brett Kulak – awarded one year contract by arbitrator
- 2018: Elias Lindholm – settled prior to hearing
- 2018: David Rittich – settled prior to hearing
- 2019: Sam Bennett – settled prior to hearing
- 2019: Ryan Lomberg – settled prior to hearing
- 2019: David Rittich (again) – settled prior to hearing
- 2019: Rinat Valiev – settled prior to hearing
In 14 possible instances, only two actually made it to the hearing room. If history is any indication, the two sides will hash out a deal before next Tuesday.
