While awaiting presents from Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, hockey fans have been given a lump of coal. The previously-scheduled return to action on Dec. 27 has been postponed, so all games on that date – including a Battle of Alberta meeting between the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers, have been postponed.
Here’s the league’s release:
The National Hockey League announced today that its regular-season schedule will not resume prior to Tuesday, Dec. 28. The League had planned to resume its schedule on Dec. 27, but in order to allow the League an adequate opportunity to analyze League-wide testing results and to assess Clubs’ readiness to play, the target date for resumption of game play will be pushed back an additional day. Teams will return to practice on Dec. 26 and it is expected that the League will provide an update on its return to play plans by the end of day on Sunday.
The Flames have now had seven originally scheduled games postponed. They have not played since a Dec. 11 home loss to the Boston Bruins. 20 Flames players (and 13 staff members, including three coaches) have been placed into the league’s COVID-19 protocol over the past two weeks. The Flames are scheduled to return to practice on Boxing Day Sunday.
The next game on the Flames’ schedule is a Dec. 30 trip to Seattle to visit the Kraken for the first time, but until games resume, don’t expect anything to be set in stone. As noted in the release, the NHL is expecting to provide an update on return to play and scheduling on Boxing Day.
