The Calgary Flames’ offence finally had some pop, but it wasn’t enough to keep a red-hot Anaheim Ducks team from taking the game in a 4-3 overtime victory.
CF% – 53.63%|| SCF% – 51.27%|| HDCF% – 44.24%|| xGF% – 52.35%
It’s a Team Game – To start off that’s the best team stat line we’ve had for two weeks. The Flames had some energy throughout their lineup after three straight games with just one goal and it showed in their early play. Huberdeau got a goal for crashing the crease before Hunter Brzustewicz got a friendly bounce to secure his first NHL goal. The Ducks never quit and found a way to start to push back on the Flames about ½ way through the game. Calgary did score an insurance marker – a power play tap-in from Matt Coronato – but the Ducks had the momentum and sent things to the extra frame. Calgary will take the point, needed the win, and will move on searching for another elusive victory.
Corsi King – Matt Coronato (78.03 CF%) looked like the Coronato who went on a hot streak early in the season. Volume seems to be a key with him – don’t defer to your teammates just be the guy to take the shot. Guys who score 30 goals in this league are allowed to be a little selfish with the puck – he’s got the ability to score 30, just needs that swagger to develop a bit more. Another player that was all over the place in a good way was Martin Pospisil (67.23 per cent) whose speed and physicality were sorely missed from this lineup. The speed alone changes how effective Calgary can be at breaking out or establishing possession off a dump-in. Not to mention he’s making the players look twice to make sure he’s not going to be a freight train and run them right over.
Under Pressure –
Taken By Chance – Jonathan Huberdeau (58.71 SCF% // 60.98 HDCF%) with 5 high danger chances had one of the best individual performances we’ve got out of him in over a month. He got his goal crashing the crease, not what I ever expected from him to be honest, but it’s where to score goals. You want fish go to the ocean, you want goals go to the net. I saw Joel Hanley (45.10 per cent // 44.66 per cent) get burned along the boards a few times last night. Usually, I don’t notice Hanley at all – the way I like it – so seeing him in a negative light was unusual. Wasn’t his best game in my opinion.
xG Breakdown –
xGF% – Mikael Backlund (70.11 per cent) just isn’t the guy whose getting you 30 goals and 70 points a season. Him being the best play driving centre the Flames have is a problem. It’s nice to see him be so dominant after there was a long stretch where I wondered if age was creeping in and becoming a factor. That happened last season too. It’s not the case here though – and without Coleman by his side he’s reminding everyone he doesn’t absolutely need him by his side to have success on a nightly basis. Although, Coleman did help that line actually produce goals so he can come back whenever – If he’s not getting moved they really need him back.

In The Crease – It’s hard to sit here and blame Wolf when all 3 of the Ducks goals were because of bad defence in front of him. Complete collapses in coverage the Ducks just took advantage of whenever they got the chance. That being said you’d love for Wolf to find a way to stop just one of those – but that’s asking a lot of any goaltender with how those were scored. I think the defensive mishaps are going to continue for the rest of the season and this kind of performance is just going to be a normal occurrence. Good, but not good enough to counter the bad defence – the 2026 Calgary Flames goaltending story.
The Goals –
Flash’s 3 Stars –
1) Matt Coronato
2) Mikael Backlund
