The Flames’ best goals of 2025-26: Blake Coleman deflects it past Avalanche netminder while falling

There were a handful of nice goals that the Calgary Flames scored towards the end of the season.

We’ve already looked at one. The third-best goal came courtesy of Zayne Parekh, who lost his defender twice and sniped it from a terrible angle. Two days before that goal, the Flames played their penultimate game of the 2025-26, hosting the Colorado Avalanche.

It ended up being a 3-1 loss to a team that went to the Western Conference Finals, and likely would’ve gone further if not for injuries. That goal came courtesy of a player who is no longer with the Flames, Blake Coleman.

Just over seven minutes into the second period, the Flames won an offensive zone face-off. Mikael Backlund won the face-off and retrieved the puck while retreating to the point. From there, he fired a wrist shot towards the goal.

At the same time as the shot, Coleman was battling in front of the net and got crosschecked. Somehow, Coleman was able to get a stick on the puck as it came by, deflecting it past the Avalanche’s netminder for the game’s opening goal.

While the Flames ultimately lost this game, this happened to be Coleman’s 20th goal of the season, and also his final goal in a Flames’ uniform. Over five seasons with the Flames, Coleman went on to score 99 goals and 199 points in 392 games. His career-best season was in 2023-24, managing to score a career-high 30 goals and 54 points, but he’s pretty consistently sat around the 20 goal mark with nearly 40 points.

Early in free agency, the Flames sent Coleman and Olli Määttä to the Minnesota Wild for Jacob Middleton and three picks over the next three drafts. While all signs point to Coleman wanting to return for his sixth season, this trade will give him (and Mättää) an opportunity to win a third Stanley Cup.
