The National Hockey League has seen a massive salary increase this off-season.

A big reason for that was thanks to the Philadelphia Flyers’ offer sheet of Leo Carlsson earlier this off-season. Since then, Macklin Celebrini and Zeev Buium have also signed high-AAV contracts. The latest beneficiary is Fraser Minten, who signed a seven-year deal worth $7.4 million annually on Tuesday.

Minten was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round of the 2022 National Hockey League draft. He made his debut in 2023-24, playing four games. Most of his 2024-25 season with the Leafs was spent in the American Hockey League, though he played 15 games where he scored twice and picked up two helpers.

Ahead of the 2025 trade deadline, Minten was traded to the Boston Bruins alongside a protected 2026 first-round pick for Brandon Carlo. The Leafs won the draft lottery and selected Gavin McKenna, but Minten has developed into a solid middle-six forward.

Last season, the 22-year-old Vancouver product scored 17 goals and 35 points in 82 games, his first full season in the NHL. He was held pointless over six playoff games, but the Bruins are betting that Minten’s trajectory continues upwards with this long-term contract.

Ducks place Chris Kreider on waivers

Because of the Carlsson offer sheet, the Anaheim Ducks were forced to waive veteran Chris Kreider with the intention of termination, solely to free up some cap space for another one of their restricted free agents, Cutter Gauthier. Since the contract termination is mutual, this will free up $6.5 million in cap space for the Ducks.

Kreider scored 22 goals and 50 points in 75 games with the Ducks last season, helping the team make the post-season where he added two more goals and seven points in 12 games. That said, most of the Boxford, Massachusetts product’s career was spent with the New York Rangers.

Drafted by the Original Six team with the 19th overall pick in 2009, the winger made his NHL debut in the 2012 playoffs, scoring five goals and seven points in 18 games. Most of his 2012-13 was spent with the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League, before becoming a full-time NHLer in 2013-14.

Over 13 seasons with the Rangers, Kreider scored 348 goals and 632 points in 958 games. He added 50 more goals and 83 points in 135 playoff games, helping the Rangers make the Stanley Cup Finals in 2014, as well as a trip to the Conference Finals in the 2012, 2015, 2022, and 2024 playoffs.
