We’re eight short days away from the 2026 National Hockey League trade deadline, and there’s all sorts of chatter surrounding the Calgary Flames.
On Thursday afternoon, TSN 1050’s OverDrive in Toronto – hosted by Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jonas Siegel – had a pair of insiders on in the form of TSN’s Darren Dreger and The Athletic’s Chris Johnston. Their conversation went around the league, including some discussion about Flames centre Nazem Kadri.
Hayes asked what a lot of people around hockey are wondering: so what’s going on with Kadri?
Dreger: There’s a market. I look at Colorado. I wouldn’t say that Nazem Kadri is the first guy on that list to add a centre in Colorado but they’re definitely interested. There’s been a fair amount of interest, but if you’re Craig Conroy, why wouldn’t you wait to see how the dust settles? You know, if you’re in that market for a centreman, aren’t you checking in on Vinnie Trocheck with the New York Rangers first? Aren’t you looking at what the Nashville Predators are doing with Ryan O’Reilly and some of the other centremen that should and could be available here?
Naz wants, he wants to move. Loves Calgary. Loves his experience in Calgary. But at this age, he wants to chase the Cup here. He wants to try to win, go to a playoff team, a Cup contending team. So he’s going to have wait a little while longer, but I mean, it’s more likely than not he gets traded.
Johnston: I just say, he’s got three years left, and that’s what makes him different from the other guys you mentioned there, Dregs. Trocheck’s younger. Ryan O’Reilly’s in the same age band but he’s only got one year left. Three years after this one are what scare teams. You know where the next conversation will go. Teams are always gonna go back to Calgary and say ‘Yeah, we’d take Kadri if you retained X amount of salary.’ I just can’t imagine the Flames really want to do that. Maybe at the eleventh hour that’s something they have to do to make a trade happen. I think trading him, lots of people love the player, but the contract and some of the things around that are gonna be what makes that a trickier deal than the ones you mentioned.
Kadri joined the Flames as a free agent during the 2022 off-season, signing a seven year deal with a $7 million cap hit. Kadri’s been a really reliable player for the Flames, serving as their top offensive centre since his arrival. But at 35 years of age, the clock is ticking on Kadri’s career. And given the Flames’ current state, and their ongoing retooling process, it’s probably safe to say that it would be awhile until Kadri would have a chance to win in a Flames jersey.
The Flames have used up two of their three salary retention slots to facilitate Jacob Markstrom’s trade to New Jersey and Rasmus Andersson’s trade to Vegas. They have one slot remaining at present, which would, in theory, be used by a trade involving either Kadri or Blake Coleman. (Markstrom and Andersson both come off the Flames’ books on July 1.)
The 2026 trade deadline is on Fri., Mar. 6 at 1 p.m. MT.
