The Calgary Flames have made their sixth-round selection, their final pick of the year, at the 2026 NHL Draft.
At 164th overall, the Flames have selected defenceman Bode Laylin from the United States Hockey League’s Tri-City Storm.
Laylin was the 131st-ranked North American skater by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service. He was ranked 88th by Smaht Scouting and 218th by McKeen’s Hockey.
A product of St. Michael, Minnesota, Laylin is a right shot defenceman listed at 6’0″ and 185 pounds. He’s spent the past two seasons with Tri City of the USHL, and he’s headed to join the Western Hockey League’s Everett Silvertips for the 2026-27 season. He had 11 goals and 38 points in 55 games for Tri-City this past season.
In the announcement of his signing with the Silvertips, a couple of their brass expressed excitement regarding Laylin joining their club:
“We’re excited to add Bode to our solid defensive group that we anticipate having next season,” noted general manager Mike Fraser. “He’s a strong skater who moves pucks very well and plays the game at a high pace.”
“We were very impressed with the year Bode had in the USHL,” added director of scouting Brooks Christensen. “We feel he will fit in great with our returning defensive corps that we have.”
Laylin’s father, Cory, is currently an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota and played professionally, primarily in Europe. Laylin’s older siblings also play. 24-year-old Luc is under contract with Hammer Eisberlin in Germany’s third division after graduating from the University of St. Thomas, while 22-year-old Casy is headed back for his junior season at St. Thomas.
Laylin will, unsurprisingly, head to the University of St. Thomas for the 2027-28 season.
