The Calgary Flames have made their fifth round selection at the 2026 NHL Draft.
At 132nd overall, the Flames have selected forward Simon Katolicky, who played this past season for Tappara in the U20 SM-Sarja, Finland’s top junior league. He’s slated to join the Ontario Hockey League’s Sarnia Sting in 2026-27 after being selected by that club in the 2025 CHL Import Draft.
Katolicky was the 21st-ranked North American skater by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service. He wasn’t ranked by Daily Faceoff, but he was ranked 138th by Elite Prospects. The Hockey News’ Tony Ferrari had him 71st on his draft rankings.
A July 2008 birthday, Katolicky is listed at 6’5″ and 205 pounds and he’s a left shot forward who played on the wing. A product of Havlickuv Brod, Czechia, he came up through Czech youth hockey, playing primarily in the HC Dukla Jihlava system, but he moved over to the Finnish junior system in 2024-25, joining Tappara. He’s represented Czechia at the Under-17 Hockey Challenge and back-to-back Under-18 World Championships.
He had 52 points in 30 games for Tappara’s under-18 team in 2024-25, and posted 17 points in 29 games for their under-20 team in 2025-26. And bear in mind, he was one of the youngest players on his team last season. He helped Tappara win an under-18 league title in 2024-25, and he was an Under-18 Worlds bronze medallist in 2026.
Over at Dobber Prospects, Anni Karvinen had this evaluation of Katolicky’s game:
Simon Katolicky is a towering forward standing at 6-4, 198 lbs. Despite a down season, Katolicky has NHL upside thanks to his tools: his straight-line speed and heavy release form a basis that will intrigue NHL teams. His game will need to improve significantly if he wants to ever step on NHL ice, but the power forward upside is genuine.
