The Calgary Flames have traded up in the 2026 NHL Draft and grabbed a netminder.
The Flames acquired the 42nd overall pick from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for their 51st overall pick and their 68th overall pick. With the 42nd overall pick, the Flames have selected goaltender Tobias Trejbal from the United States Hockey League’s Youngstown Phantoms. Trejbal was teammates with 30th overall pick Jack Hextall, also selected by the Flames.
Trejbal was ranked third among North American goaltenders by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service. He was ranked 44th by Daily Faceoff and ranked 34th by Elite Prospects.
Originally from Most, Czechia, Trejbal is a netminder listed at 6’4″ and 196 pounds. He headed to North America this past season after playing much of his youth hockey with HC Litvinov, the organization that produced long-time Flames forward Robert Reichel. Trejbal led the USHL in goals against average in 2025-26 and was named the league’s top goaltender. He’s headed to the University of Massachusetts in the fall, where he’ll join fellow Flames prospect Max Curran.
Trejbal is the near-consensus top goalie in this draft class. His numbers with the Phantoms have been excellent, and being 6-foot-4 doesn’t hurt, either. The stats don’t lie: the busier Trejbal is, the better he plays. His ability to stay calm and composed under pressure is impressive, and he has quick hands and quicker feet. Trejbal’s athleticism has gotten scouts talking, and his big frame makes him an easy project for a team willing to be patient with the UMass commit. I’ve been impressed with just about all of my viewings of his this year and feel confident he’ll be one of the first goalies off the board.
