The Calgary Flames swapped forward Tyler Toffoli to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night, landing themselves forward Yegor Sharangovich and a third-round selection in the 2023 NHL Draft. The addition of the third-rounder (80th overall) closes off a unique cycle where the Flames traded away a selection prior to the 2022 trade deadline, only to eventually reacquire it.
The third-rounder the Flames acquired was originally their own, giving the Flames a third selection in the first 100 picks in the 2023 draft.

Here&#8217;s the wacky history of the 80th overall selection&#8217;s ownership:

On Mar. 16, 2022, the Flames sent the pick (along with a 2022 second-round pick and a 2024 seventh-round pick) to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for Calle Jarnkrok. At the time, the Flames were attempting to load up for the 2022 playoffs and felt that Jarnkrok would give them additional depth for a potentially long post-season run.
On July 22, 2022, the Kraken sent the pick (along with a 2023 third-round pick) to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Oliver Bjorkstrand. At the time, the Blue Jackets were looking to open up some cap space and the Kraken, who had oodles of cap space, were able to add a useful player at a really palatable acquisition cost.
On June 9 of this year, the Blue Jackets sent the pick to the Devils for Damon Severson. This was part of Columbus&#8217; load-up of their blueline earlier during this off-season, a sequence that also saw them add Ivan Provorov from Philadelphia.
And finally, just a few weeks after the Devils acquired the selection, it&#8217;s headed back to Calgary with Sharangovich for Toffoli.
That&#8217;s four different trades for a single draft pick in a period of just 15 months. That&#8217;s wild.
