The Calgary Flames have announced that the club and general manager Brad Treliving have mutually agreed to part ways. Treliving’s contract was set to expire on June 30. The club has promoted vice-president of hockey operations Don Maloney to president of hockey operations, and Maloney will serve as interim GM until a new GM is found.

Treliving was originally hired as GM in April 2014, taking over the reins from the departed Jay Feaster (and Brian Burke, who served as an interim bridge between the two regimes). During his tenure, Treliving bolstered the team’s drafting and development team and seemed to consistently find value in his dealings with restricted free agents. He occasionally struggled with adding via unrestricted free agency, and his trade record was similarly mixed.
In nine seasons with Treliving as GM, the Flames made the playoffs five times (2015, 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2022) and advanced past the first round twice (2015, 2022).
Maloney joined the Flames as a pro scout in 2016 and was named vice-president of hockey operations in 2017. A longtime hockey executive who’s served in front office roles with the New York Islanders (assistant GM, 1991-92; GM, 1992-96), New York Rangers (assistant GM, 1996-2007) and Arizona Coyotes (GM, 2007-16), Maloney has more or less been a senior advisor to Treliving since his arrival in town.
