The Calgary Flames have made one more roster adjustment to trim their training camp group down. On Friday, the club announced that they’ve assigned defenceman Zayne Parekh to the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit.
The 18-year-old Parekh was the Flames’ first pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, ninth overall, after a simply awesome season with the Spirit in 2023-24. He had 96 points, crushing the OHL offensively and helping the Spirit win a Memorial Cup as hosts. Moreover, he won a slew of individual awards, including being named the top blueliner in both the OHL and all of Canadian major junior hockey.
Given where the Flames are at as an organization and their depth on the blueline it would have taken a lot for Parekh to win a job out of training camp as an 18-year-old. But given his obvious talent level and the progression we’ve seen so far, we’re fascinated to see how he looks at next year’s camp.
These moves bring the camp roster down to 53 players.
