Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano has been named the winner of the 2020 Mark Messier leadership award.
The award is given out annually to a player who “exemplifies great leadership qualities on and off the ice and who plays a leading role in his community growing the game of hockey.”
Giordano has been captain of the Flames since 2013 and has helped promote physical fitness, academics and leadership development in some Calgary high school through Team Giordano. Since its launch in 2014, the program has raised nearly $400k and improved the lives of nearly 3,000 students.
The 36-year-old also made headlines when the COVID-19 pandemic started when he helped to pay for groceries for some Calgary families.
One woman shared that a woman working for Giordano paid a $430 grocery bill.
Giordano was a finalist for the leadership award last year and was awarded the NHL Foundation Player award in 2016.
He is the second Flames player to win the award joining Jarome Iginla, who took home the title in 2009.
