A familiar face will be returning to Calgary Flames practices on Monday for the first time in a season and a half. 


It was reported by <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/960/flames-talk/postgame-a-tight-battle-of-alberta-loss/">Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 on Saturday&#8217;s edition of the Flames Talk Postgame</a> that left-shot defenceman Oliver Kylington will begin practising with the Flames on Monday. Kylington will remain on the long-term injury reserve for the time-being, so he won&#8217;t count against the club&#8217;s active roster but will count against their salary cap limit. (Editor&#8217;s note: Since he&#8217;s on LTIR, the Flames will have the ability to exceed the $83.5 million cap ceiling while he&#8217;s on LTIR if needed.)

Kylington was drafted with the 60th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft and spent several seasons with the Flames’ American Hockey League team getting a foothold in North America. He became a regular with the team in the 2019-20 season, playing just three games with the Stockton Heat and 48 games with the Flames. 

The 2021-22 season was a breakout year for the second-round pick, as he scored a career-high nine goals and 31 points, nearly doubling the amount of points he had coming into that season. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old last played an NHL game on May 26, 2022 before missing the entirety of the 2022-23 season and the first portion of the 2023-24 season due to personal reasons. 
Kylington made his return to hockey with the AHL&#8217;s Calgary Wranglers on a conditioning stint, playing on Jan. 11 and Jan. 19. (He missed their Jan. 12 game due to minor groin injury.) 

The Swede is in his final season of his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. Adding Kylington to a group that already features Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar and Noah Hanifin could only make the Flames&#8217; defensive depth deeper. Here&#8217;s to hoping Kylington can return to NHL game action before too long, and potentially regain the form he had in 2021-22.
